Diphthongs, Diagraphs, & Blends
My Firsties have been working on digraphs in their general classroom. This is new territory for me, so I'm finding new resources and games to help them out. Make sure you check back weekly for new digraph games!
Until the next time,
Roll and Blend
A Ms. Amy original! I grabbed my trusty Dollar Tree dice and wrote different digraph blends and vowel sounds on each dice. My Firsties took turns shaking the dice in the bucket and dumping them out to see what word(s) they could build. Even if they were misspelled, I made them write the word on their whiteboard. I wanted them to hear the sounds, not focus on spelling.
Spin, Pin, Win!
I found this game as a FREE resource on Teachers Pay Teachers. The pictures around the board have different digraphs in the word (not always at the beginning). Note: the spinner didn't work for us, so I improvised and grabbed one of my trusty Dollar Tree dice. That worked so much better! We had a blast playing! You can grab the resource below!
Connect 4 Digraphs
I saw this idea on Instagram from @primary_practioner, who saw it from @firstieland, so I must give them both credit for this fun game!
For this game, I asked my Firstie teacher for a list of words her kiddos have created using the different digraphs they have been working on in class. I bought red and yellow sticker dots from Amazon (linked). I made the blend sheet on Word and taped it across the top of the Connect 4 game. Then, I added the rest of the word to different chips.
Since I have three Firsties who come visit me, we played this game in teams, boys vs. girls. I may have helped Team Girl out a little. You can check out our game below.
As you can see, we had a great time playing this game. The boys came out on top with a red victory with getting four in a diagonal row.
This was definitely a hit with my Firsties! They asked to play again after break and even take it back to their classroom to show their friends how to play. Nothing brings me more joy than when a group asks to take a game back to share with their classmates.
Old Hoot
Do you remember the game Old Maid? If your answer is YES, then you already know how to play Old Hoot! My Littles were working on /oo/ sounds and I needed a game to help them. After some thought, I made Old Hoot. It is the same concept: ask for a word in your hand from another player. But don't get stuck with the Old Hoot card!
